The Sustainability of Structural Steel

Steel is a highly sustainable material with durable properties, ensuring structures and compliments made with the material last a long time. Additionally, it is recyclable and won’t decrease in quality, no matter how many times it is reused.

In this month’s blog at MK Steelworks we look at the sustainability of structural steel. Call our team in Nottingham on 08000 141424 for more information.

The Lifecycle of Structural Steel

Steel is a very sustainable material as it can be recycled and reused many times without reducing in quality. In addition, all materials and fuel sources used to process and fabricate the metal are not wasted as the materials will never be thrown away.

The lifecycle of structural steel involves:

  • Production
  • Fabrication
  • Construction
  • Deconstruction
  • Recycling

Steel is the most recycled industrial material globally. The metal is recycled from pre-consumer and post-consumer scrap.

Once a steel product is at the end of its life, the material is collected, prepared and reused. This is called post-consumer scrap. Pre-consumer scrap is the excess material from steel production and instead of being thrown away, it is recycled back into production again.

Using Steel in Construction

There is a range of uses for steel in construction, including:

  • Frames in Building Structures
  • Sheeting for Exterior Walls
  • Purlins in Building Roofs
  • Transporting Oil, Water & Gas

Several sustainability ratings are used to show how environmentally friendly the material is, such as the BREEAM and CFSH. For example, the BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating considers various aspects of a building when judging sustainability, including materials, waste, land use, energy use and water consumption.

Additionally, the metal is sustainable due to its durable properties. The material is highly resistant to abrasion, scratches, chemicals, fire and weather. This ensures that structures and components using the metal last a long time.
