What is Structural Steel Erection?

Structural steel erection is the construction of metal columns and frames that buildings are built on.

In this week’s blog at MK Steelworks Ltd we look at what structural steel erection is and the steps professionals take to build the structures safely.

What a Steel Erector Does

Modern buildings are built on steel frames, girders and columns, which have to be erected by specialists. Steel erectors work on a range of projects, including warehouses, blocks of flats and offices, and multi-storey car parks.

Some of the regular tasks a professional will do on a regular basis, depending on the project, include:

  • Positioning Structural Members
  • Welding
  • Operating Cranes
  • Fabricating Components

Steel erectors work on both new buildings and extensions for existing properties. For example, if you are investing in a new industrial building or extending a storage facility, you will probably require the assistance of qualified engineers.

Structural column and frame erection takes careful planning and is done by highly trained and experienced operatives. This can be hazardous work, so extensive training and accuracy are essential in order to protect workers, pedestrians and the building.

Safety Considerations

Engineers adhere to strict health and safety regulations when working on structural steel erection. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times, which includes:

  • Safety Helmet
  • Protective Footwear
  • High-Vis Jacket/Uniform

When working at heights, they will also have to wear a safety harness as this involves rigging and climbing ladders with tools and equipment. Appropriate PPE must also be worn If fabrication, welding or other modification work takes place.

Site Installation

There are many advantages to having a site installation done by a professional team of CSCS, IPAF, PASMA and CITB registered engineers. For example, experienced operatives will follow the specifications provided by an architect or design engineer accurately and efficiently.

Before the work can begin, a method statement and thorough risk assessment are completed on the site. This ensures that any possible risks have been found and taken into consideration.

Additionally, the foundations need to be inspected by specialists to ensure they are secure and suitable for the installation of the metal frame. These measures will make sure that the structural steel erection is done safely and to the highest standard.
